• Latest generation automotive technology adapted for commercial small engine use
  • Enables spill-free, on-site oil changes in minutes
  • Reduces machinery downtime, transportation and servicing costs to increase return on investment

Castrol innovation business NEXCEL is adapting its proven active oil management system for use in the commercial small engines industry. The company, which as a technical partner to Aston Martin Lagonda has demonstrated the benefits of its environmental technology in the manufacturer’s most prestigious model and endurance racing, is working with a leading supplier of commercial small engines to bring an optimal solution to market. The NEXCEL system will enable oil changes in minutes for the small engines market.

“In automotive and commercial vehicle applications, NEXCEL enables mess-free oil changes in minutes and we believe that the system can bring significant benefits to the commercial small engine industry”, explains NEXCEL sustainability director John Ward-Zinski. “Engines in the commercial landscaping market require frequent oil changes, often for every 100 hours of use, and daily checks of oil levels.

“NEXCEL is able to vastly reduce service and downtime required for oil changes, and because the cells are designed to be collected after the change, reduce the risk of waste oil getting into the environment.”

“The mess-free, sealed cell design of NEXCEL means that oil changes can be carried out on location, reducing the cost and downtime of transporting machinery off-site and to fully-equipped workshops,” he continues. “Less downtime means an increased return on investment for operators.”

The NEXCEL system is installed via a dock which is designed into the machine. The entire cell can be simply lifted out and replaced without the need for specialist tools or ramps.

NEXCEL Background Information
NEXCEL automotive application is a self-contained, sealed cell that contains the correct grade of oil and specification of filter. Designed for flexible installation anywhere in the engine bay via a docking station, it is managed by a dedicated electronic control unit that communicates with the vehicle via the standard databus. An electric pump controls the flow of oil between the engine sump and the remote cell and an oil analysis capability can be integrated. By reducing the volume of oil in the engine, the NEXCEL system has been developed to allow faster warm-up of the engine oil, which can reduce tailpipe CO2 emissions.

Containing the oil within a sealed cell also makes recycling of old oil a much more practical option because it eliminates contamination by other fluids during the drain and recovery operation. NEXCEL units can remain sealed up to the point of re-refining, allowing the oil to be returned to its original specification. Changing the cell takes just minutes. For garages, the benefits also include the elimination of spills and greatly simplified oil recovery. NEXCEL’s closed ecosystem could help to eliminate some of the one third of drained engine oil (worldwide) that currently disappears into the environment.
